YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk On How Psy's Fame Opened Doors For The K-Pop Label

When it comes to YG Entertainment's boom in international notoriety within the past several years, record label co-founder and CEO, Yang Hyun Suk, believes there is one "Gentleman" who deserves the lion's share of the credit. In an interview with the publication Maeil Economy that was published Tuesday on his label's website, Yang admitted that the fame YG Entertainment artist Psy achieved with his viral music videos for the songs "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman" was a game changer.

"Since PSY rose to global stardom, various major labels and entertainment companies have become interested in YG," Yang said.

"Many have offered to work with us. These are the people who we couldn't meet [before Psy became famous] even if we desperately wanted to. But now, they are the ones coming to YG. It's completely different from when [Psy's labelmate] Se7en was trying to break into the US market. There are so many opportunities, and now we are partnering with many of those companies."

While he may have a reputation as a taskmaster, according to Yang, his main role with Psy, since "Gangnam Style" became a worldwide Internet sensation, has been to tell the rapper to pump the brakes.

"I ask Psy to slow down," he said.

"Since 'Gangnam Style' became popular instantly, there was a lot of pressure while we were preparing 'Gentleman' for release and we were in a rush. At the moment, Psy's next album is almost ready, but we tell ourselves to slow down and look over it again before we release it."

Psy's upcoming album reportedly includes superstar cameos from Brian May of Queen, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Snoop Dogg.
