K-Pop Wrap Up: Who & What Dominated The Headlines In February 2014

The sexy concepts that pervaded January gave way to creative comebacks by Girls' Generation and 2NE1. With the delay of the Girls' Generation video for Mr.Mr and 2NE1 comeback videos, the focus of the industry shifted back to analysis of the music. Both groups witnessed record sales and acclaim, as consumers and analysts placed a greater emphasis on musical integrity, rather than video concepts. With the video for Mr.Mr., Girls' Generation commanded respect by transitioning from softer concepts to an edgier medical theme.

While the ladies gained much of the attention at the the end of the month, February began as a solid month for male artists. BTS (Bangtan Boys) challenged ideals regarding the schoolboy concept with Boy In Luv, which was in support of their Skool Luv Affair album. B.A.P  received their first music chart show win on Show Champion, on the same day in which they received the World Rookie Award at the Gaon Chart K-Pop Awards.

In addition, CNBLUE transformed into a band of flower boys and delivered one of the most versatile albums of February. CNBLUE received praise for their fifth EP Can't Stop, an album which held its own due to the composition of Jung Yong Hwa and Lee Jong Hyun.

February brought the return of an influx of K-Pop idols to Korean drama. FTISLAND's Lee Hong Ki made his return to K-Drama with Bride of the Century, while INFINITE's L has returned in Cunning Single Lady.

With the success of the Frozen and You Who Came From The Stars soundtracks, SISTAR's Hyorin continues to maintain a spot on K-Pop charts. The sub-unit of SISTAR's Soyou and Junggigo defeated many of leading acts in K-Pop with their soulful track Some, which continued to gain music show wins through the end of the month.

Beyond K-Pop, February was highlighted by the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. Women's figure skater Kim Yuna retired from the sport after taking center stage at Sochi. Kim Yuna carried the well wishes of the citizens of Korea, as well as those of many top idols. Unfortunately, Kim Yuna retired with a Silver medal, in what was a controversial defeat by Russian skater Adelina Sotnikova.
