From Yang Hyun Suk To 2NE1, Why Is YG So Influential In America?

Girl group 2NE1 recorded an all-time high record for K-Pop on Billboard charts, and main producer Yang Hyun Suk has been named a 'power man'. YG Entertainment's influence is growing in the United States. Add Psy and Big Bang to that mix, and YG has much to be proud of for its greatness in America, which is the center of the world's music market. So why is YG so strong in the United States?

YG's has a powerful fandom not only in America but of course Asia, as well Europe, Latin America, and everywhere worldwide. The reason is just one. It's because they're putting forth musicians that create music that appeals to fans worldwide, music that they can fall into.

A significant portion of YG's main focus has been hip-hop, and hip-hop fans send their most fervent cheers to this company. The most recent example is 2NE1's comeback album. On March 5th Billboard noted that 2NE1 reached a new record in America, and reported that their newest album Crush ranked number 62 on Billboard 200 Charts. They also revealed that 2NE1's title song "Come Back Home" ranked number 5 on the World Digital Songs chart.

Psy took the number 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with his single album Gangnam Style. 2NE1's latest 61st ranking on Billboard 200 Album Chart with Crush is the highest record of any K-Pop album.

In addition to the music itself, YG used dynamic and creative marketing techniques to penetrate foreign markets. They used social networking services. From early on YG's Yang Hyun Suk took advantage of the world's largest video site YouTube and posted Big Bang and 2NE1's music videos so that it could spread throughout the world. Instead of simply counting on Korea's broadcast TV programs, Yang Hyun Suk took matters into his own hands to reach global fans.

In order for this to work, YG had to invest blockbuster production costs for the music videos. With each album, YG boldly chose 3-4 title tracks and produced music videos for those songs all at once. He has a rule, "If it's not perfect, we won't release it," and it's been used to highlight and help create some of the greatest artists.

Thanks to these techniques, Yang Hyun Suk has been named as one of the International Power Players by Billboard magazine, and has ranked next to Simon Cowell and the like. He was the only Korean to make the list among music's business leaders that are most influential globally.

Billboard introduced Yang Hyun Suk by saying, "Yang Hyun Suk was a K-Pop star that debuted with Seo Taiji and the Boys in 1992, who established Korea's pop genre." They continued, "After he became a producer, he started Psy's 'Gangnam Style' syndrome and introduced Big Bang's world tour, which gathered 800,000 people across 12 countries, and G-Dragon's Asia tour, which gathered 570,000 people, as well as 771,000 people with Big Bang's 6 Dome Tour," and explained YG's global influence.
