K-Pop Groups Show Overwhelming Popularity In Latin America

On March 8th, Boyfriend became the first ever Korean group to hold a solo concert in Puerto Rico. The members could not hide their surprise at the scene. Approximately 1,700 local fans filled the venues 1st and 2nd floor seats. Not only that, throughout their 2 hour concert, the fans joined the members in singing their hit songs, cheered for the members by chanting their names, and showed an overall hot response. Even when they landed at the San Juan airport on the 6th, over 500 fans gathered to greet them, despite the late hour. They surprised both the Boyfriend members as well as the locals.

A Starship Entertainment rep stated, "It was a totally unexpected reaction. We had no idea that Boyfriend was so popular in Puerto Rico. It could be that the group Boyfriend is just overall popular, but we were able to see firsthand just how popular K-Pop is, even among the locals in that country."

The Latin American countries are establishing new growths in K-Pop's Hallyu wave. Recently K-Pop idols have been frequenting those countries.

Band CNBLUE performed in Mexico City last January, and sold out all 5,000 seats for their concert. They had a successful world tour, performing in Mexico, Peru, and Chile. Peru's broadcasting TV station Panamericana's "Sabado Espectacular" had a corner called "Concierto: CNBLUE", and covered the group in great detail while CNBLUE was in Lima, Peru for their World Tour.

SS501's Kim Hyung Jun was the first Korean singer to have a solo concert in Bolivia last January, and sang in front of 6,000 fans. There were 3,000 additional fans outside who couldn't enter the venue because they weren't able to buy tickets.

MBLAQ was noted by Mexico's media El Universal as one of 2013's shining international artists, along with Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and other international stars. MBLAQ received love for their songs "Mona Lisa", which stayed at number 1 on local music charts for 40 days, as well as "Smoky Girl" and "This Is War". Last year 'MBLAQ Global Tour Sensation' started in Mexico, which gathered 10,000 fans. There were even some fans that had to receive emergency treatment because they passed out from exhaustion during the show. Police were also dispatched at the airport because it was filled with eager fans.

In addition, SHINee will be holding their 3rd world tour this year, and they've included their tour to the Latin Americas. This April they will be visiting Mexico, Chile, and Argentina for 'SHINee World III.' SHINee member Onew stated, "I heard K-Pop was popular in Latin America. Thanks to other K-Pop groups and other parties' hard work, we're able to hold a concert there as well."

One music rep expanded on K-Pop's popularity in Latin America, saying, "Latin America culture itself is one in which they collectively enjoy one thing instead of individuals enjoying one thing. For example, in a school it won't just be one student that likes a group, but the entire classroom will like that group. That's why K-Pop is growing so fast. K-Pop's popularity isn't just a passing mania. It's to the point where if you go to a music score, one wall will wholly be devoted to K-Pop." The rep continued, "There isn't just one particular group that's popular in Latin America. If a group is popular in Korea, then they will be popular in Latin America as well. That's because information is delivered so quickly through SNS and YouTube."
