Review: 4Minute Kick The Party Up A Notch With The Red Hot 'Whatcha Doin' Today' [VIDEO]

4Minute are back with a new music video and by the looks of things, they're ready to party.

Though the band is known for delivering high-quality infectious pop that makes you want to dance, the video for "Whatcha Doin' Today" kicks both the tempo and the energy level up a notch.

The latest installment in their fruitful ongoing collaboration with K-pop's most inventive producer, Brave Brothers, pushes the group into new rhythmic territory.

Although it is impossible for any critic to pinpoint exactly which songs were influencing an artist or their producer at any given time, unless the similarities are obvious, there does appear to be major traces of New Orleans bounce music, particularly that of the sissy bounce artists of the last 10 years, in the beat Brothers is laying down in "Whatcha Doin' Today."

It is possible that Brothers is merely utilizing the same early drum machine patches that pioneer sissy rap artists like Big Freedia and Sissy Nobby used to invent some of the most innovative dance music of the last decade.

But it seems at least just as likely, that Brothers is on a New Orleans kick.

Any great hip-hop producer is always on the lookout for new sounds they can bring to what they're doing. Rap DJs in the best cases are unlicensed musicologists schooled in the meticulous art of record crate digging.

The way that the hi-hat sounds and feels on 4Minute's "Whatcha Doin' Today" along with the musical breaks both have a strong similarity to some of the best moments in sissy bounce.

Interestingly, the best musical moments in "Whatcha Doin' Today" are when the members of 4Minute are rapping. Each precious second of their rhymes, in a track dominated by singing, in filled with passion and poise.

And while the song is not one of the strongest 4Minute tracks Brothers has produced, the eclectic beat and powerful raps make it as interesting as anything else on the K-pop charts right now.
