K-Pop Goes Worldwide with Google, Facebook, and YouTube

Major worldwide media’s attention towards the K-Pop movement is becoming a hot issue.

YouTube last December officially added ‘K-Pop’ genre on their music category, along with R&B, Rock, Pop, Rap, Folk and more, becoming the very first time that a country’s specific music to be listed as a genre. Also most recently Google Korea created a K-Pop Hub on May 16.

Facebook also has created a page dedicated to K-Pop titled ‘KPOP on Facebook’ on May 20 just a day before the concert. It seems the social networks and IT companies are opening the doorways for K-Pop as it becomes an example for world to see the numerous opportunities available on the web.

The Google concert two days ago concluded as a smashing success. The 22,000 tickets for the 3-hour concert sold out within an hour and were live broadcasted through YouTube Presents which live broadcast popular artists such as Jason Mraz and Taylor Swift. During the live streaming of the concert YouTube was posted with more than 190,000 comments.

Alex Carlos, head of YouTube entertainment stated, ““This event became an important opportunity to confirm the possibility of globalization of media as to see one small East Asia country cultural contents to spread out through the world.”

YouTube has been a great powerhouse in the growth of K-Pop. According to a representative of Google shared the video clips of SM, JYP and YG Entertainment, K-Pop’s three major entertainment agencies, have recorded over a whopping 2.3 billion views last year. Super Junior a popular K-Pop boy group was able to draw in a total of 110,000 fans to Tokyo Dome this year for their solo concert without any promotions or official debut in Japan.

It will be interesting to see how K-Pop trend will continue to grow its presence all over the world with the help of YouTube, Goolge+ and Facebook.
