K-Pop Throwback: BoA's 'The Top' Is A Dance Track That's Too Nasty To Forget [AUDIO]

There was a time, possibly starting with James Brown in the 1960s and reaching a fever pitch with Rick James in the late 1970s, where if it was a dance song, things we're gonna get a bit nasty.

And though artists like Britney Spears and Prince have continued to keep those grooves that bring out our bad sides in the mainstream, there is a distinct lack of jams so funky they make people start removing clothing.

BoA is one South Korean artist who's been known to drop a nasty track from time to time. And perhaps her all-time funkiest jam is "The Top" from her 2012 album "Only One."

"The Top" crackles and pops with a jagged electro sound that makes it clear producer and co-writer Stuart Crichton is not screwing around.

Clocking in at just over two-and-a-half minutes, "The Top" is truly a tasty morsel that's gone before you know it.

The drums pop and the synth bass slides all around the lower register, cranked up in the mix like it should be.

One great thing about BoA, on all of her songs, is that she doesn't ever seem to try to hard. The vocals all have a natural, pure sound that oozes out of the speakers, not just sexy, but atmospheric.

It seems like the more computerized pop music gets, the more it can move away from that sweaty sound of dance grooves at their best.

Yet between electro revivalists like Daft Punk, soul revivalists like Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and pop stars like BoA that simply have good taste, it seems like the nastiness will live to funk another day.
