Chinese screenwriters gathered for the Hong Kong International Film Festival and discussed why a drama like "My Love From the Star" is not being written by Chinese writers. Most of the writers who were gathered gave high praise to dramas such as "The Heirs" and "My Love From the Star".

The forum was titled "Chinese Drama Styles and China's Dream". Many of the prominent Chinese screen writers gathered to discuss the state of Chinese TV dramas. Many of them began by pronouncing their appreciation for the K-Dramas and continued by saying that Chinese dramas are too "old".

One of the writers chimed in, saying that they stumbled unto "My Love From The Star" before an appointment and missed the appointment because he had to sit down and watch the whole thing. Stating that his mother also became a fan of K-Dramas, he confessed that he was challenged by his mother who asked him, "Why can't you write something like that?"

There was a few producers in the forum as well. One producer who was particularly fond of Kim Soo Hyun stated, "I was genuinely surprised by the influence that he had in China. Women of all ages gathered to meet him. It is as though K-Drama's male stars somehow help fill the void of love and companionship that many Chinese do not experience in their relationships. In comparison, Chinese dramas are outdated and unable to inspire."

The forum then delved into the reason for this limitation. One writer stated, "Chinese family dramas or historical dramas are fine, but the trendy, young-adult dramas are far behind K-Dramas. It might be because Chinese dramas are budgeted differently. Most of the money is spent on securing guarantee fees for stars, leaving very little to be spent the actual production."

Another writer chimed in, saying, "If Chinese dramas and movies are to evolve, they first need to get their basics right. There are too many occasions where historical character speaks in modern dialogue or a 1930's drama will be filmed in a 1980-style house. Writers need to understand that those small mistakes hinder the viewers from committing to that drama."

Yoon Ha Rim, the producer of "The Heirs", was also present at the forum. She stated that "The Heirs" was created with the international market in mind. She stated, "One thing that we focused on is the fact that despite the different economical and cultural backgrounds of the viewers, they all had one thing in common - the desire for a dream-like romance. We knew that creating that romance of the utmost priority if we were to globalize this drama."
