Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: How B.A.P Turned Portuguese Rocker Joana Oliveira Into A Hallyu Convert

NAME: Joana Oliveira

AGE: 19

HOME: Santarém, Portugal

FAN CREDENTIALS: "Well, I don't think that tweeting to my favorite artist counts, because I don't think they ever see my messages and, of course, they never answer," Oliveira said. "Some friends and I started six Portuguese Facebook fan pages just to share what the groups we like are doing. We translate their tweets, fancafe posts, or whatever. We are the administrators of two pages for B.A.P, two for BTS [also known as Bangtan Boys], one for WINNER and one for Topp Dogg."

INTRO TO K-POP: "My earliest K-pop memory was my reaction when I saw MBLAQ's [2008 music video for] 'Oh Yeah,' the first K-Pop song I ever heard," Oliveira said. "I saw Mir and thought, 'uh, this one is cute.' And then I saw Lee Joon's abs and I was drooling."

THE DIFFERENCE: "I'm not a really big fan of pop music, per se," Oliveira said. "I'm the kind of girl that runs and hides from all that Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Rihanna that the world is immersed in. I always listened to rock, hard rock, indie rock, metal, well, lots of rock, with a bit of folk in between. I didn't even like hip-hop, so liking K-Pop was a pretty weird thing for me."

FAVORITE GROUP: B.A.P

WHY B.A.P: "I won't say that they didn't catch my eye just because they're gorgeous and they were all blonde. That would be a lie," Oliveira said. "But what pulled me in and made me fall in love with them was how they always try to have a message in their lyrics. They don't just talk about love, breakups and other similar things like most K-pop groups. They actually try to show what they think. How the world should change and how we can believe in ourselves...it's amazing what they have achieved in two years. They're really role models in my life."

FAVORITE B.A.P SONG: "Goodbye"

WHY "GOODBYE": "It's a sad song but it has a message of hope in it," Oliveira said. "It says that you should learn from your failures and put away your weakness to overcome your own limitations and reach your objectives. You don't have to give up on your dreams because there is something in the way. You need to overcome that obstacle and never be swayed by what other people say. That's a beautiful motto and it's my motto."

FAVORITE SOLO ARTIST: Ailee

WHY AILEE: "Why? Haven't you heard that powerful voice that even made angels fall off their clouds?" Oliveira asked. "That was what made me absolutely love her. All of her songs just have so much soul in them. That girl rocks and when she gets more recognition in other countries, she'll become a number one worldwide superstar like Beyoncé. I'm sure of that."

FAVORITE AILEE SONG: "Heaven"

WHY: "I know it must be a cliché to choose her debut song, but it's a song that showcases her voice so well!" Oliveira said. "The lyrics are about love. They're about a perfect relationship. It makes me think maybe that's still possible."

K-POP FUTURE STARS: "BTS and ToppDogg have so much potential," she said. "Both groups are super talented. They write and produce their own songs. They're already super great."
