April's Must See Idols On TV

Weekend dramas have recently seen an influx talented idols with stars like FTISLAND's Lee Hong Ki, 2PM's Ok Taecyeon, and Seungri of Big Bang taking over the screen. Generally, weekend dramas have a longer run than weekday programming, with plot lines strongly centered on family dynamics. In the case of Lee Hong Ki's Bride of the Century the incorporation of supernatural elements and stronger romance have set the drama apart from most weekend shows. Ok Taecyeon has had the opportunity to display a more volatile side with his role on Wonderful Days, attesting to his capability to execute larger emotional range than he has expressed in past roles. In addition to those dramas currently airing, MBLAQ's Lee Joon will return to acting in April, in a role that promises to be as challenging as Rough Play's Oh Young.

Currently Airing Drama

While Three Days has firmly established itself as a must see drama for action fans, Cunning Single Lady has emerged from its pit of replication to become a more unique portrayal of post-divorce romance. One of the initial drawbacks of Cunning Single Lady was the portrayal of gold digging divorcee Na Ae Ra (Lee Min Jung), who desperately attempted to regain the attention of ex-husband Cha Jung Woo (Joo Sang Wook). One of the main reasons to watch Cunning Single Lady for K-Pop loving audiences was INFINITE's L. However, Seo Kang Joon of the acting idol group 5uprise has developed into one of the most interesting actors in the Cunning Single Lady cast. As Gook Seung Hyun, Seo Kang Joon is an attractive second lead, who has helped to fully develop the noona romance sub-plot.

2AM's Im Seulong is amongst the talented cast of the weekend drama Hotel King, which began airing on April 5. Seulong portrays Sunwoo Hyun, a VIP staff member employed at the Hotel Ciel. Sunwoo Hyun is in love with the female heir to the hotel, Ah Mo Ne (Lee Da Hae), and strives to protect her from harm. Hotel King focuses on Mo Ne's attempts to save Hotel Ciel, with the hotel's new general manager Cha Jae Won (Lee Dong Wook) revealed to be the son of an opponent. Lee Da Hae and Lee Dong Wook are reunited since the two starred in the 2005 Hallyu hit My Girl, with viewers hopeful that the actors will rechannel their romantic energy. VIXX N (Cha Hak Yeon) is included in the cast of Hotel King in the supporting role of Noah, a hotel employee. Hotel King will run for fifty episodes on MBC in the Saturday-Sunday 21:45 time slot that was formerly occupied by Golden Rainbow.

Angel Eyes, the weekend drama starring YG Entertainment's Gu Hye Sun and Seungri began airing on April 5. As a weekend family drama, the first episodes will feature younger versions of Park Dong Joo (Lee Sang Yoon) and Yoon Soo Wan (Gu Hye Sun) portrayed by actors Kang Ha Neul, as well as Nam Ji Hyun. Angel Eyes is a romantic medical emergency drama in which Lee Sang Yoon is reunited with his first love who was a blind girl, Yoon Soo Wan. Yoon Soo Wan undergoes eye surgery which enables her to become a 119 emergency rescue worker as an adult. Big Bang's Seungri portrays Teddy Seo, a Korean-American co-worker of Yoon Soo Wan.

Upcoming Drama

MBLAQ's Lee Joon will make his return to K-Drama with the tvN crime drama Gap-Dong. Gap-Dong is based on the terrifying real life case of the Hwaseong serial murders, which remain unsolved. Lee Joon portrays Ryu Tae Oh, a cafe barista with exceptional intelligence. As a genius, his crime solving skills prove useful to cracking the case. However, Ryu Tae Oh displays disturbing psychopathic tendencies. The thriller Gap-Dong will replace the Friday-Saturday 20:50 time slot previously occupied by Emergency Couple.

April is shaping up to be a fantastic month for Korean drama, with many top idols returning to the screen. Lee Seung Gi and Cha Seung Won will conclude the month of April with You're All Surrounded which will follow Three Days beginning April 30. The weekend will be one of the top times for dramas in April, along with the coveted Wednesday-Thursday cycle. Although, it can be time consuming, following a K-Drama provides unique insight both in the acting capabilities of idols and into aspects of Korean culture.
