Review: BTS Shows Fans A New Sound With 'Just One Day'

The newest song from Korean boy band BTS depicts a new side to the group that has gained attention for their strong style.

"Just One Day" was released on April 6, and from the start of the song it is clearly a break from the strong, rap-influenced style BTS has previously been known for. It is the first R&B-influenced song from the group, with lyrics describing the desire of the members to spend time with a lover just for one day.

The love song has a sad sound to it, depicting the feeling of BTS regarding the difficulties of idols dating. While more established K-Pop idols are able to date relatively more comfortably than idols, even the most popular idols come under scrutiny when it comes to dating.

BTS's style since debut has been extremely strong, and the group has continuously gained attention for their rebellious image. The group's songs often incorporate powerful raps and strong dances that differ significantly from many idol songs.

This is the first music video that the group released which doesn't have a strong dance to it nor have a focus on rap. While BTS still dances and shows off its impressive rap skills, the sound and image depicted in "Just One Day" show a new side to the group.

While maintaining BTS's basic powerful sound and has several raps, "Just One Day" places an emphasis on vocals, while BTS's songs have typically focused on rap and strong hip-hop choruses. "Just One Day" differentiates clearly between the rappers and vocal line, giving the vocalists a chance to shine rather than get lost among the group's powerful sound.

The group's Korean name translates into 'Bulletproof Boy Scouts,' and BTS has focused on difficulties that young men experience. They've released several school related concepts, and in "Just One Day" the members are also dressed in a preppy style that looks similar to a school uniform.

With "Just One Day" BTS has shown that it is able to break away from its typical image without losing any of its uniqueness. The softer sound and focus on vocals is a welcome change that proves BTS has more than just one image they can portray.
