‘My Love From The Star’ - Will It Surpass China And Go Global?

Insanely popular drama "My Love from the Star" is currently leading a syndrome in China, and there's question as to whether it can go beyond China and reach others globally.

The Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) held a showcase in Cannes, France on the 5th to introduce Korea's broadcasting format.

The showcase was titled, 'The Next Big Hits from Korea', and introduced Korea's popular entertainment and drama genre formats to the 200 format experts that gathered from around the world. They highlighted the recently concluded popular SBS drama "My Love from the Star," as well as KBS' "Superman Returns," MBC's "Dad! Where Are We Going?" and "Real Men," SBS' "Running Man," CJ tvN's "Let's Eat" "The Genius," and more.

One rep stated, "After the event, Endemol and FremantleMedia (some of the world's leading format production companies) expressed strong interest and made inquiries about purchasing the licenses and possibility of co-productions. They were especially interest in 'My Love from the Star', 'Two Weeks', and 'Let's Eat', and their focus was centralized around drama format for overseas potential."

One well-known company's vice president stated, "Korea's format is very fresh, and if we overcome the small matter of cultural difference in deploying the material, it is sufficient to compete in the global market."

Kim Sang Hyun of the KOCCA stated, "Korea has many creative ideas and excellent planning and creates a variety of formats. We are currently competing in the Chinese market and global market as well. Although Korea's proportion in the global market is still small, if we consider how many years it took for Korea to reach this unique position, then we need the continued support for the format industry in order to bear fruit."
