First Quarter Analysis Of The K-Pop Scene

The first quarter of K-Pop has already passed, and it's time to see what the trends were in K-Pop for the first three months of 2014.

The two main things that happened were the comeback of the veteran singers and the changing of guards in the ranks of female girl groups.

Let's talk about the change that took within the dynamics of female girl groups.

The "new guard" of female girl groups are Girl's Day, Dal Shabet, Rainbow BLAXX, AOA, SPICA, and A Pink. The old guards are obviously 2NE1 and Girls' Generation. The continual and repeated comebacks of the girl groups has a synergistic effect that played to all the girl group's favor.

However, one thing that was noticeable was that the previously unchallenged popularity of 2NE1 and Girls' Generation was now being challenged by Girls' Day.

Of course, it's not just Girl's Day. While they had immense success in January with the hit single "Something", they did not directly compete with Girls' Generation and 2NE1. Other groups such as Rainbow Black, SPICA, and AOA also took the top spots in weekly music shows without really engaging the two big name girl groups.

Even though they weren't directly challenged, it was clear that the public's opinion about these groups were turning for the better. That is, whereas previously the dynamic of popularity among girl groups was 2NE1 and Girls' Generation followed by everyone else, people began to consider Girl's Day and other girl groups as equals with 2NE1 and Girl's Generation.

Girl's Day's single "Something" is still doing strong in the charts, months after their January dominance. It goes on to show the long staying power of Girls' Day's popularity.

Girls' Generation and 2NE1 were supposed to come into the music scene and destroy the charts among themselves; instead, they were outdone by SISTAR's Soyou and JungGiGo.

One expert commented, saying, "It may be that the fans and viewers are ready for a change in the girl group pecking order of popularity. Girls' Generation and 2NE1 has been around for more than five years already. The general public is always looking for something new."

The second big trend in the first quarter of 2014 was that many veteran artists made their comeback. Among the artists that made their comebacks are Lim Chang Jung, Lee Sun Hee, Lee Seung Hwan, Lee So Ra, Jo Sung Mo, and Lee Eun Mi.

What is interesting is that these are the top singers of the 90's and early 2000's. With g.o.d's imminent return, it seems as though the K-Pop scene is regressing. However, this is not the case.

Many of these stars were the dominant in their own right while in their prime, and they have come back to their fans with music that does not summon their primes but is modern and hip.

Their strength lies in the fact that they can influence the older buyers, who have opted to purchase the albums off-line. These veteran artists' off-line sales are off-the-charts.

A music producer commented on the trend, saying, "As TV shows such as 'Respond 1994' become popular and prominent, many older fans are stricken with nostalgia. They welcome the older stars that helped shape their childhood and teenage years. As more and more of these stars comeback, look for fans in their 30's and 40's play a more critical role in shaping the K-Pop scene."
