Concerts and Events Come to a Grinding Halt

Upon news of the tragic Sewol ferry incident, concerts all over the nation were cancelled to mourn. Ansan Valley Rock Festival was cancelled altogether while World DJ Festival and Green Plugged were delayed indefinitely. Beautiful Mint Life faced much criticism as it was being cancelled.

Concerts for artists Lee Jung, Epitone Project, Lee Moon Se, CNBLUE, Jo Jang Hyuk, Bada and Jung Sung Hwa, Teen Top, 2BiC, Lee Seung Chul, Noel, and Jun Woo Sung were cancelled or delayed as well.

Lee Seung Chul delayed his concert on the 19th to the 26th and successfully performed for his fans. CNBLUE delayed their concert on the 26th to June 21st. These two concerts are the exception, however, as many of the aforementioned concerts are still up in the air as far as the delayed date goes.

Concert halls have a strict policy that prevents the scheduled celebrity from cancelling an event or a concert unless there is a natural disaster. It reads, "In the event of a national disaster, both the leasee and the leaser will not be held responsible for the terms of the contract."

Although the ferry incident is not a natural disaster, many concert promoters and celebrities are working out the cancellations and delays without any problems. One promoter stated, "It's not a natural disaster, but it's a national tragedy on a similar scale. We are fine with working it out with our fans."

The problem with Beautiful Mint Life concert was that the event promoters cancelled the event without a warning to the fans or the performers. The people who bought the tickets were enraged as were the performers who practiced and were ready to comfort their fans with their music.

There also is flip-side example, as one singer cancelled without warning to the event promoter. The event promoter ultimately decided not to file a suit because of the Sewol incident.

A hip-hop label producer made a statement on the current state of concerts, saying, "What happened on that ocean is a national tragedy, but at the same time many singers and idol groups are essentially giving up their wages because of societal pressure. I commend the ones who chose to cancel or delay their concerts. Personally, I've have spent the initial payment for the concert appearance. It's either I give it back, or I appear on the stage."

The good news is that TV stations are carefully bringing back entertainment to the weekend shows. The entertainment industry seems to be on its way back.
