EXO ‘Overdose’ Music Video Analysis - 3 Addicting Points

EXO released their "Overdose" music video, and here's 3 ways you can overdose on it.

EXO-K Vs. EXO-M

The most outstanding point about EXO's new "Overdose" activities is that the group will be active in 2 groups: EXO-K and EXO-M. As such, even the music video was released in two different versions. It's similar yet different. From the beginning the two videos are different. EXO-K's MV opened with Kai, who appeared wearing smoky eye makeup and blond hair. He looked lost in a large maze, but put on a chic expression. On the other hand, EXO-M's Luhan starred in the other MV. He was shown wearing dark eyeliner and a heavily parted hairstyle. Like Kai, Luhan was shown lost in a large maze.

The ending of both music videos also starred Kai and Luhan, respectively. In EXO-K's version, Kai put on a mysterious smile and looked as if he was exiting the maze, but then the video ended with his perplexed expression, as if he'd lost something. Luhan also looked hopeful, as if he'd found the exit to the maze, but he looked like he didn't know what to do in the closing maze. Kai's chic charm and Luhan's sad charm were expressed differently yet similarly in this maze.

Another difference lies in the part where the music starts. In EXO-K's version, blonde Suho is seen wearing a black suit and hitting an invisible wall. In EXO-M's version, Xiumin appears wearing a white suit, and likewise hits an invisible wall.

There are also subtle differences in the members' charms during their dancing. In the ‘drumming' part of the song, Kai and Tao put on the comic move of pretending to hit their cheeks in time with the drumming. In EXO-K's version, Tao is on the left and Kai is on the right, but in EXO-M's version, the positions are reversed.

Besides these, there are also differences in their motions while making the "E-X-O" motions, as well as in their costume attire, and even in their accessories. Can you name them all?

The Members' Emotional Acting

Another addicting point to note in the "Overdose" MV is the members' advanced emotion acting. The members wore black and white suits and showed off their chic yet mysterious charm. They acted as if trapped in a maze, and unveiled a wide variety of emotional acting. While some members slumped down in distress, others beat an invisible wall in anger.

D.O spotted a mysterious box coming down from above. Upon opening it, he finds that it is only filled with ashes, and he looks defeated. Lay is seen on the floor as if wounded, and puts on a vague expression. EXO members put on great facial expressions in the twisty maze, and showed off their delicate feelings through their emotional acting.

Addicting One Take Technique

An indispensable element in EXO's music video is their one take technique. It's a camera technique in which the camera continuously shoots without pausing. Since the shot has to be taken in one take, it requires thorough preparation. Previously EXO showed off this technique through last year's music video "Growl." It's a great way to show off EXO's lively choreography.

EXO used this technique once again in the "Overdose" music video. The camera ‘walks' through the members as they pretend to be each other's' shadow, and carry out their individual dance parts. One especially interesting point in the music video is the part where the camera angle moves in conjunction with the member's dance moves. The camera technique only adds to the amazing talent of the EXO members.
