Why SM Entertainment Keeps Getting Sued By Its Artists?

SM Entertainment is suffering from lawsuits with its artists.

SM Entertainment survived a round of lawsuits with the three former TVXQ members and Super Junior's Hankyung. Now, EXO's Kris has sued the agency.

All three lawsuits have to do with profit distribution and restrictions while on promotions - Kris sued the agency, stating that "SM has not treated its celebrities with vision and guidance but as a subject of control in terms of scheduling and profit distributions".

He continued: "SM Entertainment used its power to be unjust in restriction of basic human rights".

Although court dates have not been announced, the group's promotions will be affected due to this conflict.

In 2009, the three members of the former TVXQ, Junsu, Jaejoong, and Yoochun, had called for a termination of contract, stating that there was injustice in profit distribution and contract terms.

Fans, media, and the public stood divided on the matter; the lawsuit was settled in the November of 2012 but both parties suffered greatly in the 3 years and 4 months of long battle.

Super Junior's Hankyung also filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment in 2009; Hankyung now has ended his contract with SM Entertainment and is active in China.

The three lawsuits point to SM Entertainment's flaws in system management, calling a need for reassessment. One staff member stated: "Although many things have changed after previous lawsuits, SM still needs more improvement in reshaping policies and systems, because we work with people of different cultures".
