K-Pop Beyond The Charts: Rapper Lil Cham Demands Your Attention On 'All' Featuring Jijark [AUDIO]

K-Pop Beyond The Charts is a periodic review column highlighting Korea's modern day musical innovators who have yet to find the mainstream success we feel they deserve.

South Korean rapper Lil Cham doesn't need Auto-Tune to get the party started.

With a stripped down production sound that is equal parts The Neptunes and M.I.A., Cham shows that she can provide all of the fireworks that a good dance track needs.

Whether you're talking about hip-hop in Korea or the US, the problem is the same; overzealous producers using endless tracks to layer endless pitch-corrected digital crap.

For an art form that grew from street corners and house parties, modern rap is too often the sonic equivalent an overstuffed taco.

That's why we need sassy groundbreaking artists like Lil Cham, to show us how little you really need to build a huge sound. Her snare rolls, and elongated cymbal crashes, while nothing revolutionary, are shaped in such a way that feels personal and fresh.

And while there is seemingly an unending baby voiced rappers set to follow in Nicki Minaj's footsteps, Cham is able to offer a nod to the sound of the "Starships" singer while not getting caught away in a machinegun-like cacophony of nasal delivery.

Jijark offers a laidback cameo on "All," throwing another vibe on what is already a song that goes to several places.

One major song highlight is the chorus, which refreshingly doesn't reach for a pop hook. Instead it keeps the sound steeped in the streets while throwing an edgy layer of strings to take the listener to a new place.

Eat your heart out Nicki.
