K-Pop Rewind: Uhm Jung Hwa 'Poison'

The 1998 single “Poison” is considered one of the most recognizable songs of female vocalist and actress Uhm Jung Hwa. “Poison” was released on the fourth album from Uhm Jung Hwa, “Invitation”, which was one of the best-selling albums of 1998. “Invitation” rode the wave of success that followed her collaboration with Jinusean for the single “Tell Me”. With its diverse musical influences which range from techno to hip hop, “Poison” attracted attention and was one of the stand out singles of “Invitation”.

The music video for “Poison” stars Uhm Jung Hwa alongside actor Cha Seung Won. It is visually striking with a monochromatic color scheme, highlighting the aurally arresting aspects of the key changes in the song “Poison”.

During the nineties, Uhm Jung Hwa was regarded as one of the top female vocalists in Korea. She was a chorus member for MBC during the late eighties. In 1993, Uhm Jung Hwa made her solo debut with the album “Sorrowful Secret”. Over the span of fifteen years, Uhm Jung Hwa released twelve albums including “005.1999.06” which sold over a million copies and earned the vocalist a Golden Disk Bonsang.

In 2008, Uhm Jung Hwa released the extended play album “D.I.S.C.O” with assistance from YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk. The title track for “D.I.S.C.O” featured Big Bang rapper T.O.P. The success of the EP was followed up by a remix entitled “D.I.S.C.O Part 2” which featured a collaboration with Big Bang leader G-Dragon.

Over the course of her career, Uhm Jung Hwa has received notoriety as a successful actress. Most recently, she starred in “Venus Talk” which focused on the lives of fortysomething career women. Uhm Jung Hwa also currently stars in the tvN romantic comedy “Witch's Romance” which is an adaption of the 2009 Taiwanese drama “My Queen”.
