K-Pop Brazil: A Look At Idol Concerts In Rio And Sao Paulo

Thursday, June 12 marks the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and with all eyes on Brazil for the next coming weeks, some of our favorite K-Pop stars are making appearances in the country.

Last weekent, Brazil was flooded with Korean idols for the 2014 Music Bank World Tour, a live concert tour produced by KBS's music performance program Music Bank. The latest installment was held in Rio de Janeiro on June 7 and included live stages from Korea's top pop groups SHINee, B.A.P, INFINITE, MBLAQ, and MIB as well as idol rock band CNBLUE and soloist Ailee.

But this year's Music Bank World Tour is far from Brazil's first taste of K-Pop.

As Korean music, entertainment, and pop culture continues to spread its influence across the globe, South American cities, and those in Brazil in particular, are becoming increasingly important marketing opportunities for K-Pop artists.

Back in December 2011, Cube Entertainment was the first major Korean record label to really venture out to meet Brazilian fans. BEAST, 4Minute, BTOB, G.NA, and Roh Ji Hoon traveled to meet nearly 5,000 fans in Sao Paulo for the 2011 United Cube Concert, which also happened to be the first large-scale K-Pop concert in the country.

The following year JYJ member Junsu embarked on his first solo world tour, stopping over in Sao Paulo on September 8 for a sold out performance at the Espacio Victory. The XIA 1st World Tour Concert was just the next exciting step for Brazilian fans to experience K-Pop live in their home country.

In 2013, due to high demand, many more Korean stars made their way to Brazil.

The 2K13 Feel Korea music festival was held in Sao Paulo and featured performances by Kim Hyun Joong, Ailee, and hip-hop group BaeChiGi. The festival was organized by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization as well as the Korea Brazil Society and the Consulate General of Korea in Sao Paulo.

With so many influential organizations involved, 2K13 Feel Korea was an important step for K-Pop in Brazil and helped open up the market for more artists to make strides in the country. Perhaps most notably in recent months, SM Entertainment's highly regarded male group Super Junior.

The group's fifth world tour, Super Show 5, brought the members to Brazil for the first time. Performing for a crowd of more than 8,000 fans, Sao Paulo was one of several stops in the South American leg of Super Junior's tour.

The group proved to be more popular than anyone could have guessed and the crowds at the airport during their arrival to and departure from the country required the Sao Paulo police force to significantly beef up security measures.

With more and more K-Pop artists expanding their influence across the globe, fans in Brazil, and many other countries across South America and the world, can surely expect more live concerts in the near future.
