#HappyLeeteukDay Tops Worldwide Trends Despite Idol's Tenure In Army

Fans of Super Junior's leader Leeteuk have been busy.

Despite the fact that the member has been serving his required military duty since 2012, fans haven't forgotten about him. On June 30 and July 1, the hashtag #HappyLeeteukDay topped Twitter's worldwide trends.

While K-Pop tags are constantly topping Twitter's worldwide trends, it usually is due to a new release or a scandal that is currently going on. Occasionally birthday messages from the fans to an idol begin to trend, but it is rare for birthday tags to top the chart. It is unheard of happening for an idol who hasn't even been active in nearly two years.

Leeteuk's fans have been raising anticipation for July 29, when the idol is expected to return to civilian life from the army. He started his military service on October 30, 2012 and served active duty.

Even though it's been almost two years, fans still remember his birthday.

The Super Junior leader performed in the military-produced musical The Promise with several other celebrities who were serving in the army, including actors and members of idol groups 8Eight and Supernova.

Fans have watched Leeteuk carefully during his time in the army, waiting in anticipation for his return. However, last January Leeteuk's father committed suicide and killed Leeteuk's grandparents while doing so. Even so, he returned to active duty shortly after, and it is expected that he returns to SM Entertainment shortly after ending his duty.

Super Junior has seen two members already return from their military service, and is one of the only idol groups to have done so succesfully.

Prior to #HappyLeeteukDay, fans have showed support for the idol by trending dates such as "D-36" on Twitter, in anticipation of Leeteuk's return.
