Bob Dylan Lost Acetates Found; What They Are And How Much Are They Worth?

Sitting in a Manhattan apartment nestled safely in Greenwich Village, old and unreleased recordings from Bob Dylan were silently gathering dust.

Lost work in the form of acetates from the "Times They Are A-Changing" singer dating to the late 1960s and early 1970s has been found in Manhattan. "One of the great finds in a lifetime of looking. 149 unknown Bob Dylan acetate records, discs that Dylan himself used during the making of Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning," said new owner and record collector, Jeff Gold, according to The Guardian.

The recordings were found in the home of a woman who Dylan rented space from during the time period. Acetates are home-recorded demo versions of material used for preliminary purposes before an artist's official studio recordings.

According to The Guardian, Gold wrote, "When I opened the boxes and took a quick look at the contents, I was blown away. They were indeed all by Dylan, all were in excellent condition and many had handwritten notes on the sleeves. They all dated from the sessions for Dylan's albums Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning, about equally split between 10-inch discs with a single song and 12-inch discs with multiple songs. Though I couldn't listen to them on-site, I knew this was a major discovery, and made an offer for the collection more than double what I had expected to pay."

Dylan's handwriting is also featured on some of the tracks. "The sleeves contain notes written by Dylan and producer Bob Johnson, indicating which takes were good, as well as some Dylan doodles. Johnson confirmed his and Dylan's handwriting to the record collector," said Kory Grow of Rolling Stone.

Gold is asking thousands of dollars for the unreleased tracks, the most expensive being a $7,000 alternative order of songs for Nashville Skyline.

Last week, handwritten lyrics to Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" song were auctioned for more than 2 million dollars. The acetates are being sold on RecordMecca.
