Wardrobe Inspection: Breaking Down The f(x) 'Red Light' Concept

In past years the K-Pop girl group f(x) has been known for their colorful concepts and funky pop style of music. However, they took a drastic turn and left for the dark side in their latest comeback, "Red Light." Out of all the concepts that f(x) has had thus far, this is easily my favorite.

What I believe they were trying to go for with the "Red Light" concept, in respect to the lyrics, was an inner self-fight. Hence, in the music video they are shown in military printed clothing and strong patterns and make-up.

If you notice, make-up was only put on one side of the eyes. The lyrics state "Maybe it's love." and "Open your eyes and look wide." From these lyrics, my guess is that half of you can see the truth for what it is but the other one is skeptical of whether it's love or not. The eye that does have make-up shows bold colors and seems less vulnerable than the naked eye. Another sign of this is the patch over the bare eye being blinded.

If you have yet to see the music video, check it out below!

I would like to now showcase my favorite look from the "Red Light" concept of each member.

Victoria's hair in this concept is absolutely flawless. There is not a single curl out of place on her head not mention the luster that exudes from it as well. In previous concepts, Victoria usually wears her hair straight or in ponytails for the most part. The change just in the hair alone shows a stronger side and gives a deeper impression. Because Victoria's eyes are quite large, the chosen make-up only accentuates the size.

Out of all five members, Krystal's concept is probably the darkest of them all. Though her hair is a bright blonde, it is contrasted heavily with the charcoal make-up and a slightly Gothic haute look. Another thing I noticed about Krystal look is that in her solo shot, she is seen wearing a large crown of crystals. Coincidence?

I am absolutely in love with Amber's concept switch for Red Light. Rather than putting her in the usual tomboy style that we're all accustomed to, Amber dawns a feminine display in the series of released photos. Amber is one of the most versatile members as so clearly displayed. For those who prefer Amber's tomboy style, it is redeemed a bit in the music video as she wears her signature knee shorts and no skirts. Another key feature for Amber's 'Red Light' concept is her siren red hair. We've been used to blonde, brown and black for a long time with Amber and now we can add another color suited for her to the books.

Blue Fire is the name I give to Luna's hair for the Red Light concept. It kind of reminds me of Hades from the Disney version of 'Hercules' with these hues of blue. Even so, this color suits her quite well and makes her seem powerful almost. If Lara Croft of Tomb Raider dyed her hair blue and got a trim, then she would look something like Luna here. This is the first time that SM has really given her a bold hair color, whereas before, she would only dawn natural colors like blonde, brunette and black. Another note on Luna's hair is the fact that this is the shortest is has ever been since debut rocking a blueberry bob.

Rather than her concept photos, my favorite look of Sulli come straight from the music video itself. She is shown in a black pinstripe blazer, wavy hair, and sparkling hoop earrings. In contrast to the other looks in the video, this particular looks actually gives off a businesswoman feel. She went from being the second youngest to looking like one of the oldest members in the group.

The look as a whole is one that only certain people can pull off and f(x) proves that they own this concept. Rather than the dark and sexy concept that we've seen more than enough, this concept is dark and powerful displaying strength and will. They are standing true and not being fully blinded by love and affection like a lot of songs.
