Unlocking The Truth, Middle Schooler Metal Band, Signs $1.8 Million Sony Deal: From Brooklyn To Coachella, With Help From Time Square Youtube Viral Video [VIDEO]

Unlocking the Truth may be cooler (and definitely younger) than 5 Seconds of Summer, One Direction and any boy band that you can think of. Middle schoolers from Brooklyn just signed a $1.8 million deal with Sony. Their metal band, Unlocking the Truth, played at Webster Hall, Coachella and more, all because of a Time Square Youtube video that went viral late 2013.

Now the Malcolm Brickhouse, 13, Alec Atkins, 13, and Jarad Dawkins, 12, are about to become one of the biggest things that happened in metal band scene.

Just last year, the middle schoolers from Brooklyn has been hustling in New York, displaying their musical chops in public for free. Watch the Youtube video of Unlocking the Truth that went viral in 2013 here:

The video gathered more than 1.6 million views and immediately made them famous, at least on the Internet. If you want more of Unlocking the Truth goodness, watch a 30-minute video of their last performance in Time Square here:

Since their humble days of rocking out in Time Square, the boys have opened for Guns N’ Roses, played at Webster Hall and Coachella and are currently on the Vans Warped Tour, according to New York Magazine.

And now, they’ve sealed a five-record agreement with Sony.

The New York Post reports that the boys will receive “$60,000 advance and 16 to 17 percent in royalties”, but “they'll only get to tap into the rest of the $1.8 million if and when their first album sells 250,000 copies”.

"I'm so excited! We’ve made it!" Alec Dawkins, the 13-year-old bassist of Unlocking the Truth, told the New York Post.

His mom was excited too, but she emphasized that "School work comes first. If their school work is not done, they don’t play”.

The only comparable boy band in the market are One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer, but these two don’t even come close to what Malcolm, Jarad and Alex has to offer as Unlocking the Truth. While metal music isn’t exactly mainstream pop culture, these boys are making the genre possibly more accessible for tweens, teen and adults alike.

Which may be a good thing for the music world.
