Facebook Decreasing Hold On Teenagers, Reports Say; Is There A New Social Media Network To Compete With?

Facebook, touted the most popular social media platform in the world is decreasing hold on the teenagers, The Next Digit reported.

Citing the result of a recent report by iStrategy Lab users, from 13 years old to 17 years old are on a decline.

"The percentage of teens ages 13 to 17 who use Facebook in the United States fell to 88 percent this year, that number revealed a drop from 94 percent in 2013 and 95 percent in 2012," according to the article.

The report also noted that Facebook has also suffered a dip in other age groups, with an overall decline of users to 90 percent.

Last year Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman said that daily Facebook use among younger teens dropped from the second to the third quarter.

However in earlier reports Facebook's Chief Operating Office Sheryl Sandberg said "the vast majority of US teens are on Facebook, and the majority of US teens use Facebook almost every day" Cnet quoted her as saying.

The report said that teenagers are opting for another form of social media platform, which are Snapchat, Apple's iMessage, what's App and Google Hangouts.

Facebook is also getting criticized for its changing policies.

Earlier it announced that it is implementing new policies by Jan. 1, 2015.

Facebook users probably recognize the new notification from the site that says, " By using our services after Jan. 1, you agree to our updated terms, data policy and cookies policy and to seeing improved ads based on apps and sites you can use. Learn more about these updates and how to control the ads you see."

Part of the notification explains that Facebook has made changes in users control over their News Feed. The latest addition in the Facebook News Feed settings is an option to unfollow any friend.

Despite the decline, Facebook still commands over a billion users worldwide.
