‘The Notebook’ Star James Garner Dies Of Natural Causes; Celebrities Send Condolences To TV And Film Actor

"The Notebook" star James Garner died of natural causes as celebrities extended their condolences to the man known as Maverick. He was 86 years old.

According to ABC News, "The Notebook" star James Garner has "built a six-decade career playing ruggedly charming, good-natured anti-heroes." He was awarded the highest distinction by the Screen Actors Guild in 2004.

Although "The Notebook" star James Garner starred in various roles since he started in the 1950s, he was best known for playing the TV character Bret Maverick, a gambler who was quick with his wit as he was with the ladies.

James Garner left because of a contract dispute in 1960, although he played the same type of character in films such as "The Great Escape," "Support Your Local Sheriff," "Thrill of it All" and "Move Over Darling," the website said.

"The Notebook" star James Garner's mother died while he was just young and he and his brothers separated as a result. His father, however, managed to reunite the family, according to People, but it's not all bed and roses. They all had to deal with abuse at home from an alcoholic father and abusive stepmother.

"My dad worked hard as an upholsterer and carpet layer but he was a rake and he drank a lot. He'd come home bombed and make us sing to him or get a whipping," he said. That is why all his life, "The Notebook" star James Garner always rooted for the underdog.

"I cannot stand to see little people picked on by big people. If a director starts abusing people, I'll just jump in," he added.

Lou Diamond Phillips tweeted: "RIP to my friend, James Garner. He was a man of infinite warmth and kindness, an icon in our industry and a consummate gentleman."

James Woods added: "Seems like yesterday... Last of the breed. #JamesGarner."

Larry King wrote: "A great guy and a great actor passed away today - James Garner. A dear man...Rest in peace, James."

Rob Lowe also added his tribute to "The Notebook" star James Gardner: "Comedy, drama. Movies and TV movies. Did series when it wasn't cool and made them iconic. Never stooped to "acting! " James Garner: my hero."
