It's over for Alex Ovechkin and Maria Kirilenko! The Russian sporting power couple, who were engaged in December 2012, have decided not to pursue their relationship further.

The first sign of no wedding on the horizon came when Russian sports news service R-Sport reported the break up on July 20, complete with a quote from Maria Kirilenko.

"I have decided to terminate the engagement," said the Russian tennis star, as translated in the Washington Post. "There are many reasons, but I do not want to go into details. I'll say one thing: our relationship completed, but I respect Sasha as a person and athlete, and I sincerely wish him continued athletic success..."

"At this moment, I'm concentrating on getting prepared for the nearest tournament. And I'm hoping that soon I'll make my fans happy with news not only about my personal life, but also about my sports achievement," Maria Kirilenko continued.

To confirm the news of the break up with her Twitter followers, Maria retweeted a link to the article from her personal Twitter account on July 21.

Alex Ovechkin has not yet commented publicly on the split, on Twitter or otherwise, and is said to be vacationing in Saint-Tropez with former KHL player Ruben Begunts and Brooklyn Nets player Andrei Kirilenko (no relation to Alex's girlfriend Maria).

The announcement of the couple's split and therefore no wedding on the horizon will no doubt disappoint fans of the Russian duo, who met at the US Open in 2011 and were the subject of a Sports Illustrated feature last year.

At the time, Alex Ovechkin said it was "destiny" that brought the pair together.

"I believe in destiny," Ovechkin said, quoted in the Washington Post. "I don't think [the relationship] changed my personality, but it's changed my lifestyle. No more crazy stuff like I did in the summers."
