Jon Stewart Raises $150 Billion in Mock Pledges in Mock Bid to Buy CNN; Daily Show Host Is Scared to Cash It In

"Daily Show" host Jon Stewart started a $10 billion Kickstarter program to buy CNN from Time Warner.

"You got some very attractive rewards at every level, for instance, $10,000 lands you in a signature CNN mass shooting coverage six box," said Stewart.

CNN is not officially for sale, but Stewart cited a Morgan Stanley analysis that estimated the asking price at about $10 billion.

"That's a lot of money for anyone. But not a lot of money for everyone," he said.

The host of The Daily Show announced that he's already pulled in $150 billion in pledges, but admits he might be disappointed when he tries to charge donors' credit cards.

"Can I tell you something? Our fake Kickstarter to buy CNN is up to $150 billion now. When we charge their credit cards I have a feeling we'll be disappointed."

One day after Stewart created LetsBuyCNN.com, he hosted CNN reporter Fareed Zakaria, who hosts  "Fareed Zakaria GPS" for the news network, in a mock attempt to boss him around.

In an interview with Jon Stewart, Fareed Zakaria admitted "I'm a little nervous because I realize I might be speaking to my future boss."

"I hope that you end up getting CNN. I think it would be a fascinating challenge for you," Zakaria added, pointing out that Stewart currently programs a half hour of news four days a week. CNN programs 24 hours of news, seven days a week.

Stewart said his plan to fill the remaining airtime was to "just let Wolf Blitzer fill in."

Rupert Murdoch recently announced an $80 billion buyout offer for CNN, which Time Warner, CNN's parent company, rejected.

Jon Stewart is where a lot of people get their news. The Daily Show may be a satire on the cable news reporting, but deft truths are regularly spouted from behind those jokes. Jon Stewart, who took over The Daily Show from Craig Kilborn, has always been on target in his social commentary. More on point than Fox News or MSNBC and definitely more in the know than CNN.
