Rafael Nadal Injury Update: Keeps US Open 2014 Hope Alive, Coach Uncle Toni Alters Training Regimen, Says ‘He Knows What He Must Do’

Rafael Nadal exacerbated his wrist injury during a practice last week, almost pulling out of the U.S. Open 2014. But Rafa is not about to throw in the towel just yet. Despite his injury, he kept the U.S. Open 2014 hope alive by posting a picture of him training on Facebook. His coach Uncle Toni told a Spanish website that U.S. Open is still a possibility.

Rafael Nadal wrote on his Facebook, “Training these days, always optimistic,” with a picture of himself revving up for a serve.

Last week, he announced his injury on Facebook:

Rafa Nadal’s wrist injury has been causing him problems for some time now. Last year, he had to skip two Masters 1000 tournaments because of his injury, which brought him down on the WTA rankings.

This year, he had to pull out of Roland Garros 2014 due to his wrist injury.

But the Spaniard always had an eye for longevity. He tailors his training regime to make sure that he is not pushing himself in a dangerous way.

According to Tennis News, Rafa’s coach Uncle Toni Nadal told a Spanish website called Point Break that the world number 2 will only play in the U.S. Open if he is well enough.

“[Rafa] will do an MRI,” he said, “You must be immobilized three weeks (from the time of injury). This would end on Tuesday or Wednesday before the U.S. Open. Theoretically we can come, but we'll see. I guess a week before and we'll know if the injury is on track. Let's wait until the end. The date is no limit. When we are good we will compete, and if we are not well, we will not compete.”

Rafael Nadal’s injury exacerbated during a training session while practicing his backhand. Since then, he has been consulting his Uncle Toni to make sure that they alter the training regime to make sure that he can keep up with his fitness while protecting his wrist.

“There are training with the forehand, the volley, service and backhand slice,” added Uncle Toni, “If the board was in favor of New York in the early rounds, Rafa would have the opportunity to find the best solution because it is not even a beginner who needs to play a lot of games. He knows what he must do.”

Rafael Nadal took an unusually long holiday between Wimbledon and U.S. Open to attend a friend’s wedding with his girlfriend Maria “Xisca” Francisca Perello. He skipped Rogers Cup in Toronto to save his wrist.
