After several attempts of reconciliation, Californication actor David Duchovny and Tea Leoni are officially divorcing, People reported.

The celebrity couple has been married for 17 years but separated several times during the course of the marriage.

The People article, citing TMZ, stated that divorce papers were filed in June and that it cited "irretrievable breakdown of the relationship," as a ground for the couple's divorce.

The report added that Leoni would have the physical custody of their two children, Madelaine West, 15 and Kyd Miller, 12.

The couple has agreed to a settlement concerning their children, with Duchovny reportedly paying US$ 8,333 a month in child support and will be responsible for payments of summer camp, private school and college tuition fees.

The article added that Tea Leoni will also be getting spousal support from David Duchovny in the amount of $US40, 000 a month.

This year, 48- year old Leoni returned to television in the CBS show "Madam Secretary," playing Secretary of State.

In an Associated Press report in July, Leon said she has asked her kids permission to return to work.

"I turned to my 12-year-old son and I said, "It's going to be a little tricky. I'm not going to be around as much, are you cool with that?" Leoni was quoted as saying.

Duchovny was popularly known for playing Fox Mulder on "The X-Files" and Hank Moody on "Californication." His performance in both shows earned him acting accolades.

In 2008, Duchovny checked himself to a sex addiction rehabilitation center, months after he announced he had separated with Leoni but reconciled after and again separated in 2011.

The two remained married until their official divorce in August 9 this year that was kept quiet from the media.

Rumors has circulated romantically linking Duchovny to his former X-Files co-star Gillian Anderson.
