Water bottles all around! The cast of "Downtown Abbey" have taken to Facebook to address the recent buzz around their press photo oopsie.

When an official still for the upcoming fifth season of UK costume drama "Downton Abbey" was released with a historically inaccurate water bottle tucked in the background, it started a whirlwind of fan responses. But in a new photo on Facebook, the show has decided to use the media attention to promote clean water.

"The cast of "Downton Abbey" embraced 'water bottle-gate' today by posing for a picture to promote the work of international charity WaterAid," captioned the photo on the series' official Facebook page.

The picture shows most of the season 5 cast holding up a bottle of water. Some of the actors are shown posing coyly with the now-infamous item in question, while others simply smile.

WaterAid posted a statement about "Downton Abbey"'s response to the supposed "water bottle-gate" scandal on its website:

"A publicity still released this week hit the headlines when a plastic water bottle was spotted in the corner of the picture. The official photograph of The Earl and Lady Edith was cropped and used during the launch of the new season, but it was when an un-cropped version of the image worked its way onto the internet that it sparked a global press frenzy."

According to an ITV spokesperson, the cast is using the recent "water bottle-gate" to draw attention to clean water initiatives. WaterAid even created the hashtag "#wh2oops" so that fans could spread the word about the show's commitment to the international charity.  

In a statement, Barbara Frost, Chief Executive of WaterAid, said:

"It brought a really big smile to my face when the cast of Downton Abbey said that they wanted to support WaterAid's work. How fantastic that the attention created over one water bottle ends up benefiting some of the world's poorest communities through access to safe, clean water today."

For every donation made to WaterAid, the UK Government will match the amount in order to help communities without clean water and sanitation.
