Elizabeth Vargas Back In Rehab; Continues Battle Against Alcohol Dependency

Elizabeth Vargas is back in rehab as she continues her battle with alcohol dependency.

The "20/20" anchor has confirmed in an emailed statement that she has entered a treatment facility while on vacation in California over the weekend.

"As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process," the 51-year-old Elizabeth Vargas said to Page Six about returning to rehab.

"I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time," Vargas added.

ABC News, the network Vargas works for, released a statement that it supports her decision and will await her return.

"Nothing is more important than Elizabeth's health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her," said ABC spokeswoman Heather Riley. "Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return."

According to The Daily Mail, Elizabeth Vargas announced her rehab stint last November 2013.

The statement was acknowledged by Vargas herself in an interview with "Good Morning America" which aired in January, saying that she was an alcoholic and that it took her years to admit it.

She also mentioned that she dealt with panic attacks since she was a child.

"I dealt with that anxiety, and with the stress that the anxiety brought, by starting to drink," she mentioned in the interview.

Vargas started her career in broadcast journalism at Chicago's WBBM and later joined NBC News as a "Dateline" correspondent.

Vargas is married to Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Marc Cohn and they have two sons, 10-year-old Zachary and seven-year-old Samuel.
