Long-time 'SNL' Announcer Don Pardo Dies At 96; Cause Of Death Still Unannounced

Long-time announcer for comedy program "Saturday Night Live," Don Pardo, died Monday in Tucson at the age of 96. His death was confirmed by his daughter Dona Pardo, but the cause has not been announced yet.

According to Los Angeles Times, NBC spokesman Rich Licata also confirmed the Don Pardo's death without citing the cause, but Pardo reportedly broke a hip last year.

Pardo started his career in radio in Providence, Rhode Island, before shifting to television as an announcer at NBC in 1944.

As a young radio announcer, he was part of shows such as "Front Page Farrell" and Pepper Young's Family."

When he finally moved on to television, he became an announcer for shows including "The Kate Smith Evening Hour" and the original versions of "The Price is Right" and "Jeopardy!"

According to the New York Times, Pardo started with "SNL" when the show began airing in October 1975. He was part of the show's 38 seasons, missing only season 7, until the show's finale in May, hosted by Andy Samberg.

"Every year the new cast couldn't wait to hear their name said by him," said "SNL" creator Lorne Michaels.

Don Pardo retired from "Saturday Night Live" in 2006, 8 years before his death, but could not completely leave the show and recorded his introductions from his Tucson home.

Pardo was born Dominick George Pardo on February 22, 1918, in Westfield, Massachussets.

"They used to call me Nicky, and I didn't like that," Pardo said in a recording in 2006 for the Archive of American Television. "So when I got into radio, I took up Dom. [But] people would always say 'Don.' I said, the heck with it; I'll be Don."

While more popularly known for being the voice of the introductions on "SNL," Pardo also took a hand at playing the role of engineer, making sure that radio programs are cued and go live at the right time. "If you could not do those chores, you would not last as a radio announcer," the legend said.

Pardo is survived by his children Paula, Dona, Katherine, David and Michael, as well as five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
