‘Purge’ Pranks Springing Up Across Social Media After Louisville Purge Hoax Goes Viral

The Louisville "Purge" buzz is escalating as cities across the U.S. report similar messages showing up. While the "Purge" film series hasn't been a hit with critics, it has drawn in a decent amount of fans who, like the prankster in Louisville, want to see the film come to life.

It all started last weekend when an alleged social media message began to circulate, that for 12 hours all crime would be legal in Louisville, Kentucky. This is the basic premise of 2013 film "The Purge" that starred Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, and Max Burkholder. Time magazine reported that, "a higher rate of anonymous tips was reported, but police said locals went about their business as usual despite the threats of violence." In short, the Louisville "Purge" became nothing but a social media hoax.

That is, until, more messages began popping up in other cities.

USA Today reports, "In Colorado, an image is making the rounds on Twitter and Facebook depicting a masked man with a list of Colorado cities where the "purge" is to occur, including the date of Sept. 6 from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m." They also go on to mention that a similar situation has surfaced in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Meanwhile, an image on Twitter is currently being retweeted with cities, dates and times that the "Purge" will come. As of today, the next city on #ThePurgeIsReal tag is New York City, set for August 22nd. Some Twitter users however are finding it to be just an excuse for a good meme. As of now however, no police department in any of the cities affected confirmed anything in regards to the "Purge" media. Instead they remain fully committed to upholding the law.

While the sequel "The Purge: Anarchy" receiving a good box office return at the beginning of the summer, it's not surprising that someone finally got the idea to attempt to imitate the high concept horror film. In the very least, all this "Purge" generated scare is a reminder of the power of social media.
