'Superman' Comic Book 'Action Comics No. 1' Sold For $3.2 Million; Bags Record For Most Expensive Comic Book Copy Sold

The "Superman" comic book that started it all - Action Comics No. 1 - was sold for $3.2 million, making it the most expensive comic book copy sold.

Action Comics No. 1, the "Superman" comic book that reportedly made the superhero industry in 1938 was auctioned off on eBay last Sunday. The seller of the comic book, who is now $3.2 million richer is Darren Adamas, the owner of Pristine Comics based in Washington.

"I'm proud to have owned the most valuable comic book in the world... this auction allowed me to share this rare treasure with the global community and ensure the next owner is just as passionate about its place in history," said Adams when asked for a statement about his sale.

Adams reportedly paid a hefty sum for the comic book, which he later sold and that there were several offers he did not accept prior to putting it up for auction.

"I actually held it for a few years - I was so excited about this book. And equally exciting to having a book of this condition is the fact that nobody knew it existed. Most books have a history ... but this book was totally off the grid, and nobody knew about it till I made it known," Adams explained.

Adams was confident about the price people would shell out for his rare piece. "The idea of sitting at $2 million was never really a risk in my mind," said Adams. "Too many people have such an interest in this book. This book is like a museum piece. It's like a freak-of-nature work."

And that he was able to prove as the winning bid closed at $3,207,852.

In an auction on ComicConnect in 2011, a bid of $2.16 million was made for another near-mint copy of the "Superman" comic book. The said copy was rumored to have belonged to actor Nicholas Cage.
