Orlando Jones Bucket Challenge Twist: Actor Replaces Ice With Bullet Casings For Michael Brown, Ferguson, Twitter Erupts

The celebrity ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ videos keep on pouring in, but Orlando Jones created a new twist on the concept: Instead of filling his bucket with ice water, he used bullet casings. The actor explained that while he still intends to donate money to the ALS Association, he did it this way in order to draw attention to the shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown, and the following police occupation in Ferguson, Missouri. Since Jones released his video, Twitter has erupted with responses, both supporting and maligning the actor.

Jones explains in his Bucket Challenge video, “this past week I’ve watched an American city turn into something akin to a warzone,” In reference to Ferguson. He went on to say that there is a “sort of us vs. them mentality,” adding that “it all seems to stem from some militarized police force, threatening the rights of people to assemble.” The actor pointed out that he is a member of the NRA and a special member of the Louisiana police force, and insisted his intention is not to point fingers. Instead, he said, “I’m challenging myself to listen without prejudice, to love without limits, and to reverse the hate,” adding that he hopes viewers at home will accept the challenge too.

Most of the negative comments Jones has received on Twitter are racially charged and fit the basic line of thinking expressed by many Ferguson police defenders. Tweets fired at Jones include, “Tell it to the rioting blacks. They don’t care. They have a major death wish”; “The hate comes primarily from blacks. Whites R rapidly becoming sick of it”; and “Was Orlando Jones high on Purple Drank In honor of Trayvon? Just another anti-cop loser supporting a thug.” Fortunately, Jones has also received messages of support, with tweeters saying things like, “For my money you’re a hero Mr. Jones,” and simply “Thank you @TheOrlandoJones for honesty.”

Jones elaborated on his take on the campaign, on Tumblr, where he wrote, “My ‘bullet bucket’ challenge is not about pointing fingers, and it’s not about being angry. Every shell casing in that bucket represents the life of someone who fought and died in the goal for civil rights and human dignity.” He concluded that as a reserve sheriff, “I will not stand by while others violate human and civil rights under the cover of authority, and I will insist that other good cops rise to the same standard as well.”
