Catherine ‘Cici’ Bellis Not Youngest Player To Win At US Open 2014: American Teenage Tennis Player Defeats No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova

Yes, Catherine “Cici” Bellis is a very young player to win at US Open 2014, but is not the youngest ever to win at the tournament. The youngest, as the history books would have it, goes to Anna Kournikova in 1996. But being the youngest player to win the game against world number 12 Dominika Cibulkova at the US Open? That still is a huge accomplishment.

“I’m so speechless right now. I have no words,” Cici Bellis told ESPN right after the win. “I can’t believe I got through that.”

The American youngster beat Slovak player in a thrilling three setter, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

“I never thought I’d come out like this,” she continued. “It’s unbelievable. The atmosphere here is crazy. It’s amazing.”

Seeing how Cici Bellis was a junior champion just happy enough to make it to the US Open 2014, this win is a big surprise for her.

According to the Washington Post, Cici Bellis, at the age of 15, became “the youngest player to win a U.S. Open match since former Russian phenom Anna Kournikova did so in 1996”.

Anna Kournikova still holds the “youngest player ever to win at the US Open” title though. Sorry Cici.

We’ll have to wait and see if Cici will be able to continue her good luck streak like Anna did. Anna Kournikova went onto the fourth round of the US Open 1996 before getting beaten by Steffi Graf, the eventual champion that year.

This is quite the embarrassment for the world number 12 Dominika Cibulkova. Not only is she 10 years older than the American teenager, but she also reached the Australian Open final last year.

Do you think Cici Bellis has what it takes to forge on?
