Cee Lo Green Banned From Military Show: Former 'Good Life' Star Losing More Gigs After Twitter Comments On Rape

More bad news for Cee Lo Green, whose career seems to be spiraling downward at top speed since he tweeted a series of comments about rape that infuriating many. The singer has been cut from the lineup of a performance at a D.C. navy base scheduled later this month. Jezebel reports that the concert organizers cite Green’s Twitter comments the reason for their decision.

The D.C. chapter of the military’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department posted a comment on Facebook, explaining their decision to cut the singer from their upcoming ‘Freedom Live’ concert. In it they explain, “We seek a Department-wide culture of gender dignity and respect where sexual assault is completely eliminated and never tolerated, where sexual assault victims receive compassionate and coordinated support, and where offenders are held appropriately accountable.” They go on to say that “one of the performers we signed for the JBAB Freedom Live show on 20 September recently posted comments on social media that we consider to (be) completely inconsistent with Navy core values…As a result, we have made the decision to pull CeeLo Green from the Freedom Live event on 20 September.”

Green’s troubles began last weekend, after he pleaded no contest to possession charges stemming from a 2012 case in which drugged a woman’s drink with MDMA. While the victim says she woke up in bed with Green, having no memory of the events of the night before, the singer was not charged with sexual assault due to lack of evidence. On Monday, the singer attempted to defend himself in the court of public opinion with a series of bizarre tweets, including one that said “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” Followed by, “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! So WITH implies consent.”

After receiving very strong and predictable backlash, Green deleted his entire Twitter account, only to reinstate it the next day, with a half-hearted attempt at an apology. On Tuesday the singer tweeted, “I truly and deeply apologize for the comments attributed to me on Twitter. Those comments were idiotic, untrue and not what I believe.” Unsurprisingly, that did help.

Being cut from the military base concert is not the first blow Green’s career has received since the scandal broke. TBS announced earlier this week that they were pulling the plug on his reality TV show, The Good Life. Network sources insisted that the cancelation was due to poor ratings, but the controversy surrounding the singer’s comments could not have helped. Entertainment Weekly reported at the time that women’s rights advocacy group UltraViolet had begun circulating a petition to get the show canceled. As it stands right now, it doesn’t seem like things will be looking up any time soon for the embattled star.
