FIBA World Cup 2014: USA Becomes Only Favorite For World Title As Rival Spain Goes Down, Parker-Less France Advance To Semis

FIBA World Cup 2014: It seemed as if this year's tournament was made specially for Team USA and Spain.

That's when the unthinkable happened.

In a twist of fate, underdog France ousted heavy favorite Spain, 65-52 in their quarter finals match, which saw the Spaniards lose to an undermanned but determined French squad.

Since the tournament began, we have lamented and criticized Team USA's usual slow starts, and contrasted it to the consistent play of Team Spain from start to finish of every game they had since the group stages.

However, it looks like Spain is not used to slow starts, and the only one it had for this year's FIBA World Cup might have cost them a Finals berth and a possible shot at the title.

Veteran NBA forward Boris Diaw led the way for the Frenchmen in the win, contributing 15 markers, 5 rebounds and 3 assists, while team mate Thomas Heurtel chipped in 13 points.

However, it was NBA sophomore rookie Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz was the difference in the paint as he grabbed 13 boards compared to the total of 12 for Pau and Marc Gasol. Overall, France dominated the rebounding department 50-28, amounting a lot of second chance opportunities.

As for Spain, only the older Gasol was in his usual self, shooting 7 out of 12 from the field for a total of 17 points. His younger brother however, Marc as well Serge Ibaka were only limited to just 5 points, combined.

According to Spain's veteran guard Juan Carlos Navarro, they had underestimated France, whom they beat by 24 points just a week earlier.

"Everyone thought we had won this before it started, but we didn't prepare well for the game and were trying to play catchup the entire way."

France will face Serbia, who also forged an upset against powerhouse Brazil in their quarter final matchup. Team USA will meet Lithuania tomorrow.
