McKayla Maroney Photos Lead To Child Pornography Charges? Petition Signers 'Not Impressed' With Gymnastics Star, Twitter User Threatens To Sell The 'Fappening' Pics

As if things weren’t bad enough for McKayla Maroney right now. The Olympic gymnast, who was one of the victims of the nude photo hacking scandal that has impacted dozens of celebrities, is now the subject of a “We The People” petition asking that she be charged with child pornography, since she reportedly took some of the photos in question when she was under 18. Meanwhile, an anonymous twitter user is threatening to sell the photos, as well as those of several other celebrities.

Maroney had originally insisted that the photos of her were fakes when the scandal broke, but later an attorney for the athlete confirmed their authenticity by contacting Porn.com to inform them that their client was underage in some of the photos. The legal maneuver was successful, the website says they took down the photos immediately, but no one saw this other potential consequence coming.

The petition, launched on whitehouse.gov, implores the government to not let the gymnast “get away with a crime that would get a normal teenage girl landed on the sex offenders list.”  While it may seem  counterintuitive to charge a teen with child pornography for self-produced photos, it is in fact increasingly common. Newsweek reports that in most states, a minor can in fact be charged with a felony for producing and distributing such photos, and if convicted, could wind up on the sex offenders registry for life.

Meanwhile, the moderator(s) of Twitter’s infamous “Fappening Report” account claim(s) to have yet unreleased photos of the gymnast for sale, as well as those of other celebs such as Aubrey Plaza, Kaley Cuoco and Avril Lavigne. The Epoch Times reports that while Twitter has taken down the account in question, at least one Reddit user claims to have corresponded with the person(s) behind it via email. The user said in a post, “They want $250 for most sets…it sounds like 3-5 other members may have bought sets or not. Anyone have any knowledge about this?” Since then, interested parties have been speculating over whether the claim is legitimate, just a scam, or possibly an FBI sting.
