Miley Cyrus 'Bangerz' Tour Antics To Land Her In Jail? 'Wrecking Ball' Singer's Flag Stunt In Mexico Angers Officials

Miley Cyrus has long since proven she has a taste for controversy, but her latest antics could land her in deep hot water. While performing in Mexico on Tuesday, which happened to be the nation’s Independence Day, the singer incorporated the Mexican flag into her act in a way that some find highly disrespectful. Now some officials are saying she violated flag desecration laws, a crime that could land her in jail if she is prosecuted.

The act in question involved a giant prosthetic butt, which Cyrus has taken to wearing during her shows. As the singer was strutting around the stage twerking in the piece, a backup dancer began whipping it with a Mexican flag. The audience at her show went wild, but it turns out not everyone who saw the footage was amused. TMZ reports that the congress of the state of Nuevo Leon is demanding that Cyrus face criminal charges. In Mexico, desecration of the flag can result in a  $1,200 fine and 36 hours in jail.

This is far from the first time Cyrus’ derriere-related antics have created a scandal. At the 2013 VMAs, she angered a lot of parents of her tween fan base, when she stripped onstage, twerked, spanked her backup dancers and ground up against Robin Thicke – effectively shedding her kid-friendly Hannah Montana persona. At the time, some parents in the US and Canada went as far as to boycott the singer, demanding that concert venues cancel her shows. The effort was unsuccessful, but earlier this year the singer was banned from performing in the Dominican Republic on morality grounds.

In addition to general lewdness, Cyrus has also been accused by many of cultural appropriation because of the way she references hip-hop culture in her performances. Many feel that what she does reduces the genre to racist stereotypes. This criticism has grown especially strong since she began wearing the prosthetic, which she introduced with a parody photo in which she mimicked Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda cover. At one point, professor and social commentator Marc Lamont Hill tweeted that her use of the piece “looks and feels like a high tech, ‘post-racial’ form of Blackface.”
