Joan Rivers Selfie-Gate Update: Doctor Says She Never Took Pic During Surgery

Earlier this week, the explosive rumor surfaced that Joan Rivers’ ear nose and throat specialist not only performed an unauthorized biopsy during the comedian’s final surgery, but actually took a selfie with her while she was under. The story looked like one more strike against the embattled Yorkville Endoscopy clinic, where Rivers’ fateful procedure took place. Well now it seems that the doctor in question is defending herself, insisting that neither the biopsy nor the selfie ever took place.

CNN reported on Wednesday that sources said Dr. Gwen Korovin stopped surgery in the middle of the alleged biopsy, in order to take the alleged selfie, before Rivers stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. Now TMZ reports that friends of Dr. Korovin have told them that she is saying the claims are absolutely false, and that she did nothing wrong during the procedure.

TMZ also reports that several of Dr. Korovin’s other patients have contacted them to vouch for her. It seems the ENT is highly held in very high regard by patients and the medical establishment alike. Mirror reports that she has worked with many other celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Hugh Jackman. She eve made a brief appearance in Celine Dion’s 2010 documentary, Through the Eyes of the World.

Whatever actually did happen that day could prove to have serious impact on the future of Yorkville. It was reported shortly after Rivers’ death that the New York Department of Health would be reviewing the clinic in order to determine whether to launch an official investigation. If the department finds that any wrong doings occurred, the repercussions could include the closing of the clinic, not to mention the loss of medical licenses and even possible jail time for those involved. It was reported last week that Yorkville, perhaps hoping to hedge their bets, fired the doctor responsible for overseeing the whole procedure.
