White House Fence Jumper: Man Made It Through The Front Door Before Getting Arrested; Prompted Evacuation Of The West Wing [PHOTO]

The New York Post reports that a man who hopped the White House fence this past Friday evening made it all the way through the front door before he was actually arrested. The event occurred just after President Obama and his daughters had departed the building, and prompted the evacuation of much of the West Wing.

The intruder is said to have scaled the north fence, and darted across the residential lawn and into the building before agents were able to grab him. The security breach prompted Secret Service officers to draw their guns and rush staffers and journalists out a side door.

According to the New York Daily News, Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said that the man appeared to be unarmed to officers who spotted him jumping the fence, and a search of the suspect turned up no weapons. The jumper has recently identified as Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas. He was placed under arrest and transported to the George Washington University Hospital after complaining of chest pain.

As a result of the event, the Secret Service has received harsh criticism concerning whether or not it is truly able to protect the President. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) called their actions "totally unacceptable," stating further, "Unfortunately, they are failing to do their job...These are good men and women, but the Secret Service leadership has a lot of questions to answer...Was the door open?"

This is not the first time the Secret Service has been under fire - in 2012, 13 Secret Service agents and officers were implicated in a prostitution scandal during preparations for Obama's trip to Cartagena, Colombia. Most recently, this past March an officer was found drunk by staff at a Dutch hotel the day before Obama was set to arrive in the Netherlands.

Donovan stated, "This situation was a little different than other incidents we have at the White House...There will be a thorough investigation into the incident."
