Michael Phelps Twitter Apology: Olympic Swimmer Expresses Remorse After DUI Arrest, Will Comeback Be Affected By Legal Troubles?

Michael Phelps has found himself in deep hot water. The Olympic swimmer, who recently came out of retirement, was arrested in Maryland Tuesday morning for driving under the influence – after he was pulled over for speeding. He later took to Twitter to express remorse for his actions. This is the second DUI arrest for Phelps, and it is unclear, as of yet whether this will impact his comeback.

Phelps was driving 85 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone, and had crossed double lane lines when police pulled him over. The swimmer failed a field sobriety test, and was found to have a blood-alcohol level of nearly twice the legal limit. He was arrested, booked and then released.

Later Phelps tweeted, “Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility.” He continued, “I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”

Phelps returned to competitive swimming in April, after 1-½ years in retirement. He won three gold medals at his first international meet since coming back, swimming the medley relay of a program in Australia this August. He has had his share of both wins and losses in the months since his return, and there has been the inevitable talk about him possibly competing in another Olympics. His arrest, though, may put a damper on the momentum he’s been enjoying. This is the second DUI for the athlete, who was previously arrested in 2004 at the age of 19. Police have not release details regarding the current situation, but he could potentially wind up serving jail time.
