It looks like Amanda Bynes’ current troubles began well before her latest DUI arrest on Sunday. It was starting to look like the actress had turned a new leaf lately – after a series of arrests and mental health struggles she was attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, and looking healthy and happy. But reports have surfaced that Bynes was actually kicked out of the school last month for substance abuse and poor performance. Friends have reportedly been concerned for some time, but her parents won’t take action to get their daughter help.

TMZ reports that Bynes regularly ditched her classes at FIDM, and when she did show up she was often clearly intoxicated. Student Rachel Loritz told the site that she almost always came to class wearing sunglasses, and she would laugh at inappropriate times. The troubled star also reportedly paid students to do her homework, and was caught cheating on a test. Loritz says she had regular mood swings, and would get into “horrendous arguments.”

TMZ reports that Bynes’ has not received the help she needs because parents refuse to re-establish a conservatorship, which would enable them to compel her into treatment. Sources say they still do not believe that their daughter is mentally ill, but simply think “she’s a bratty kid who thumbs her nose at them and smokes a lot of pot,” as one source put it. As it stands, it is impossible for authorities to put the actress on a 5150 psychiatric hold until she creates what is deemed a substantial risk to herself or others. Friends are now just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

It is unclear, as of yet if Bynes’ arrest will qualify as cause to enact the hold. She was found to have been driving under the influence of marijuana and Adderall, which is a violation of her probation for a past reckless driving arrest. The actress moved out of her parents’ house recently after her previous conservatorship ended, and sources say she has stopped taking her anti-psychotic meds. Gossip Cop reports that the Bynes’ now says they don’t even know where their daughter has been since she bailed herself out of jail.
