Playstation TV is coming to finally put an end to broadcast television. The Playstation TV release date is October 14, as Sony confirmed on Twitter.

The device competes with Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV as a small, inexpensive set-top box for streaming media. The diffence is that Playstation TV will also be able to remote play for the PS4, which allows you to play your PS4 on a TV it isn't connected to. More importantly, the Playstation TV will aslo have access to stream a catalogue of over 1,000 games from PS Vita, PSP, and PSOne. The PlayStation Now game streaming service which makes this possible recently entered a limited beta on Sony's consoles and select Bravia television sets.

The box will cost $100, and it will also be available in a $140 bundle that includes a DualShock 3 controller, 8 GB memory card, HDMI cable, and a copy of the "Lego Movie: The Video Game"

The PlayStation TV has the dimension of 65.0 x 105.0 x 13.6mm and weighs approximately 110g. It features ARM Cortex A9 core, IMG SGX543MP4 as the GPU, 1GB internal memory, AV output (720p, 1080i, 480p), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LPCM 2ch sound output, and about 2.8W of maximum rated power consumption.

"This TV could be a proper streaming device, one that could compete well with the other ones that are out there - the Apple, Roku, even things like Amazon FireTV," Brian Blau, research director of consumer technology at Gartner, told the BBC.

"It's not the most robust streaming service and it's not the most robust gaming device but it's enough of both for the price," he added.

The device is not target at serious gamers, but to those who are looking for a second-screen or the ability to play older PlayStation games.

"Sony is trying to introduce a broader audience to PlayStation, so with PlayStation TV, they can address a lower income or more casual market and provide access to a huge library of games," said Michael Pachter, research analyst at Wedbush Securities.

PlayStation TV is the former Vita TV, which launched in Japan last year.

A lot of devices for streaming to television already exist; however, the thing that really makes the Playstation TV different is the amount of content Sony can provide, because of its powerful presence in both film and games.
