Is This Dracula's Dungeon? Archeologists Uncover Vlad The Impaler's 15th Century Prison

Right on time for Halloween season, archaeologists unearth what they believe to be Vlad the Impaler (Dracula)'s dungeon in Turkey's Tokat Castle.

While Dracula's character is fictional, archaelogists believe that they have uncovered the dungeon where Vlad the Impaler - the inspiration for Bram Stroker's classic - was kept in the early 15th century. According to a report from Turkey's Hurriet Daily News, the dungeon was discovered while they were doing restoration works at the castle. There they found out that there was a secret tunnel that leads to a military shelter and the Pervane Baths.

"The castle is completely surrounded by secret tunnels. It is very mysterious," said Ibrahim Cetin, an archaeologist working on the restoration. "It is hard to estimate in which room Dracula was kept but he was around here."

Before Vlad the Impaler was known as such, he was formally Vlad III - a Walachian prince believed to be held hostage by the Ottomans at the castle in 1442. He was believed to have been kept captive with his younger brother Radu. As captives, the brothers were reportedly honed in riding horses and fighting but some accounts say that they may have been tortured as well and that Vlad witnessed the Ottomans' impaling of their enemies.

Vlad the Impaler later earned the name for the way he killed his enemies. Among the many stories of Vlad's executions was the incident when he had an audience with diplomatic envoys in 1459. When asked to remove their hats, the envoys declined and said it went against their religious custom. They were later executed but their hats remained on their heads forever as Vlad ordered for them to be nailed on their skulls.

Vlad, who was believed to have been born between 1428 and 1431 in Sighisaora, Transylvania (now Romania), reportedly got the surname "Dracul," which means dragon from his father Vlad II Dracul, who belonged to the Order of the Dragon. The group was reportedly formed by King Sigismund of Hungary and fought for Chistianity against the Ottoman Empire in Eastern Europe.
