Japan Readies for Typhoon Vongfong; Supertyphoon Death Toll Reaches 6; Astronaut Takes to Twitter to Say `I’ve Seen Many From Here But None Like This’

Japan will be hit by the powerful Typhoon Vongfong this weekend. Officials say this will be the strongest storm to hit Japan this year.

Astronaut Reid Wiseman took to Twitter to warn about the supertyphoon as seen from the International Space Station. Wiseman tweeted "I've seen many from here, but none like this."

Typhoon Vongfong will hit the southern island of Okinawa hardest. The storm is predicted to landfall late Saturday or early Sunday.

Super Typhoon Vongfong, the most powerful tropical cyclone of the year so far, may make landfall in Japan in a weakened state. The storm is expected to pass over Okinawa, just east of the U.S. Kadena Air Base.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecasts that Typhoon Vongfong is on course to continue north toward Japan over the next couple of days. Typhoon Vongfong is expected be packing winds around 115 mph, which is the equivalent of a category 3 hurricane, when it reaches Japan's Okinawa Prefecture.

An official from Japan's Meteorological Agency told Reuters news agency "There is no question that (Vongfong) is an extremely large, extremely powerful typhoon. It's the strongest storm we've had this year, definitely, although it has lost some strength from its peak."

After it hits Okinawa, Typhoon Vongfong is forecast to move into southern Japan from Sunday into Monday with 90 mph, category 1 winds. Vongfong will bring heavy rain, between eight to 12 inches of rain is possible in the far southeast prefectures. Widespread totals of three to five inches will impact the southern half of the country.

The death toll from Typhoon Vongfong has risen to six. Five other people including two U.S. servicemen remain missing, according to reports.

Japan is still recovering from former Typhoon Phanfone, which hit over Tokyo and other major cities during Monday's morning rush hour. 600 flights were cancelled. Bullet train service was suspended and factories were shuttered. It was downgraded to a low-pressure system by Monday night, Japan's meteorological agency said.
