Google Fiber Austin: 1GBPS Internet & HDTV Service Coming To Residents Of Texas City; Open For Sign-Up Dec. 2014

Google Fiber Austin: Google says, “Get ready, Austin” as the tech leader is now now building its network in the Texas city for the launch of Google Fiber. The company’s high-speed internet and HDTV offering will begin signing-up customers by December 2014.

According to the Google Fiber microsite, the company is continuously “laying out the 1,000+ miles of Fiber that will form the foundation of our network.” The service will bring 1GBPS internet and high-definition TV service to residents and even a free 5MBPS internet if they opt to pay for a one-time $300 construction fee.

“Not every part of Austin will get Fiber. But every area of Austin will have a opportunity to get it,” said Google Fiber chief Mark Strama, as reported by Daily Tech.

Daily Tech also notes that like Google has done in other cities, if the company receives enough signups in a particular neighborhood to justify the costs of laying fiber, it will then begin the construction and installation process for residents. The tech-focus site says that when the company’s required minimum for signups isn’t met, then the neighborhood will simply be passed over.

The launch of the company’s ultrafast internet service is a bit later than expected, the Wall Street Journal reports. The city of Austin will be the third location for Google Fiber after Kansas City, Mo. and then Provo, Utah. The connection speed that Google Fiber offers is 100 times the US average.

Based on the company’s earlier announcements, prices for Google Fiber in Austin maybe similar to what is being offered in Kansas City where residents can choose an Internet and TV package for $120 a month. There is also an Internet-only service for $70 a month and a slower internet service that’s free for seven years after a $300 installation fee.
