Alongside the big reveal of the new Apple iPad Air 2, was the launch of its smaller brother, the iPad mini 3. We wouldn't blame you if you've missed it, though. As Apple only dedicated one slide at the end of the presentation to the iPad mini 3. So, does this symbolize the lack of flair from its older predecessor? Let's go find out!

The iPad mini 3 is, unfortunately, almost the same as the mini 2. It uses the the same screen, the same camera, the same A7 SoC, the same resolution: 2048 x 1536 resolution at 326 pixels per inch. Oh, except it now comes in gold too. So, at least there's that.

How about size and weight you, ask? Surely Apple is known for making devices extremely thinner. Um, no.

The iPad mini 3 has the exact weight and dimensions as last year's model. As with the previous generation the new mini 311g for the Wi-Fi model or 341g for the cellular version. The original non Retina iPad mini (still available) is still the lightest iPad available at 308g for the Wi-Fi and 312g for the cellular model. For comparison, recently launched iPad Air 2 is slightly heavier than the iPad mini 3 at 437g or 444g depending on the version.

One significant (and probably the only upgrade) that comes with the new iPad mini 3 is the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, as reported by PCmag.com. With the addition of the TouchID, users can now unlock various apps using their fingerprint. You can also use it to do your online shopping, as long as those stores recognize Apple Pay, of course.

The lack of update is actually very upsetting, especially to first generation iPad mini owners looking forward to an upgrade from the ancient A5 chip. But if you don't care about Touch ID, 128GB of storage, or a new gold color scheme, you can get a 16GB iPad mini 2 powered by the extremely capable A7 chip for $299, which is $100 cheaper than the iPad mini 3- which is, let's face it, essentially the same tablet.

Nice try, Apple.
