'Wicked' The Musical Movie Adaptation Eyeing On 'Let It Go' Singer Idina Menzel As Elphaba's Mother? 'Glee' Superstar Lea Michele As Lead Star?

Two of the most famous Broadway musicals are on its way to the big screen! Both "Wicked" and "Spring Awakening," which won a number of Tony's in the 2000s, are actually moving forward after years of waiting.

"Let It Go" singer Idina Menzel - who played Elphaba and won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical - is most likely not going to be cast in the movie adaptation as she was told that she's "too old" to play the role, however she would love to play a part in the planned project.

Upon talking to Digital Spy, the award winning actress jokingly said that she was asked for the project to play a "mother" role, saying:

"Yeah, as the mother of Elphaba."

"I would die to be in [the film], except I'm afraid Kristin [Chenoweth] and I... they told us we're a little over the age for that," she added.

"If I could be a part of it in some way, that would be great. But I already feel like I received - and continue to receive - the gifts from Wicked and how it affects audiences," Menzel added.

On the other hand, "Glee" star Lea Michele - who actually worked with Idina Menzel in "Glee" as mother and daughter - is reportedly trying to get the lead role for the movie adaptation.

"Lea thought she'd be a shoo-in for Wicked, but now Idina may get it because she's hot after singing Frozen's hit song."

Casting Menzel in "Wicked The Musical" movie adaptation seems perfect specially now that she was able to make Billboard history again. The original Broadway cast recording of If/Then debuted at No. 19 on the Billboard charts, the highest debut for a Broadway cast recording since 1996 when a little show called Rent did the same thing, which by the way also starred "Let It Go" singer Idina Menzel.

Meanwhile, Vulture was able to talk to "Wicked" composer Stephen Schwartz during the opening night of Idina Menzel's new musical, "If/Then," where he revealed that the "Wizard of Oz" origin story has already "started gearing up" for the big screen. Although, he admitted that there are still no concrete plans for the Wicked movie adaptation. However, after years of false starts, it seems that this year could possible the year for "Wicked" in the big screen.

"We're starting to do some work on it," Schwartz revealed of Wicked The Musical movie adaptation. "We've actually started gearing up on it a little bit."

"I don't know exactly how many years away it is," Schwartz said, but he did say that he's very optimistic about the movie adaptation and that his creative team are already thinking about what to consider in order to do so.

"What are we going to change?" Schwartz said. "What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story? [We can] really look at it again and say, 'Oh, we can do this, and we've always wanted to do that and we couldn't onstage, but we can in a movie.' We're actually having a blast."

On the hand, "Spring Awakening," which originally starred by Jonathan Groff and Glee's Lea Michele is on a rather faster track than "Wicked." The multi-talented composer Duncan Sheik admitted to The San Diego Union-Tribune that he and partner lyricist Steven Sater are planning to start with the movie production this year.

McG (Charlie's Angels) is tapped to direct the movie adaptation while Tom Hanks' production company, Playtone is set to produce.

Sheik also revealed that lyricist Steven Sater already wrote a new song for the movie adaptation.

Sheik said he and lyricist Steven Sater wrote a new song for the movie. "The real truth always is that it's the only way you're eligible for an Academy Award, is to have a new song," he said. "[So] we've written the song. I can't wait to do it -- I hope I get to do it, to record it."
